week 4: self-hosted wordpress nuts and bolts

  • A word (or two) about security
  • In-class work, your project:
    To complete the in-class work, you must secure your hosting company before class. You must be able to access the email associated with the accounts from webmail and a lab computer or your own laptop (not just a phone).

    • Self-hosted WordPress (basic site set-up)
    • Install one of your themes (working in pairs)
    • Turn on Akismet (use your WP.com account info)
    • Social media integration (sharing)
  • Update the project pages : add link to website (include the sub-directory if you have one) for milestones, brainstorming (pswd protected – remember, this site’s name and our hashtag)

 

Housekeeping

  • Open the following web pages in separate browser tabs or browser windows (your choice) and be sure to keep them open to make it easier to switch from one to another
    • This page
    • Your WordPress.com blog dashboard
    • Your web hosting company dashboard (first screen after log in)

Assignment 1 (we’ll talk about this in 2nd half of class)

Write about how you might/will you use a blog with your site and post to your WP.com blog; add this to your project page on this course blog

Project pages should have link to the post:

Assignment 2 (we’ll talk about this in 2nd half of class)

Find three themes (free or $) that you find visually appealing; create an interesting post (creative headlines!) about them on this course blog; your primary audience is your fellow classmates – what might they want to know? Include a screen capture of each one. Remember to link to each theme.

  • For next week, general assignment: before next Wednesday, make a post here (as an author on this course blog) that is a WordPress “how to” (very big umbrella); select the category “WordPress how-to” for your post.
